Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024, was the date of an historic event in Sabal Springs — the first ever golf course tour proudly sponsored by the Golf Committee and Michael Stewart, director of golf. Sixty residents of our community assembled on a brilliantly sunlit afternoon, climbed into 30 golf carts and were led along the golf cart paths by volunteer tour guides to see their neighborhood from a whole new perspective. Along the way the guides entertained the participants with facts about the game of golf and how it has to be played on our very narrow course. All of the fairways are lined with houses with a great deal of water hazards and sand traps along the way. The guides pointed out the streets nearby each hole so that everyone could figure out what hole their home was closest to.
Due to the overwhelming response to the event, a waiting list was started to get a feel as to whether an additional tour will be held in the future. It was very evident that everyone who took the tour came away with a better understanding of the pride our golf community takes in the well-cared for little gem of a golf course we have here in Sabal Springs. Michael and his capable staff do a wonderful job grooming this asset.
A $5 per-person fee covered the golf cart rental, and each participant was given a coupon for a free hot dog and a bag of chips from the staff of The Lake House at their Sunday Funday afternoon gathering. The tour participants were also given a voucher for a free round of golf courtesy of Michael Stewart. Hopefully, we will attract some new golfers to the course after they try it out and fall hopelessly addicted to a game that can be so rewarding and at other times so aggravating. But, as “they” say, golf is, after all, a four-letter word.
A big thank you to all who came out in support of the project and to the many volunteers who helped make the First Annual Golf Course Tour a grand success. Watch for information regarding a future tour this spring.
