A little NFL trivia …
The NFL turns 105 this year. Originally founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA), the name changed to the NFL in 1922. With only a handful of teams at the outset, the Arizona Cardinals established in 1898 as the Morgan Athletic Club in Chicago are the oldest NFL team; they are also only one of two teams that were part of the NFL’s inaugural roster in 1920. While they’ve been based in Arizona since 1988, their history dates back to the late 19th century. Their name was derived from the color of their uniforms. A few years after they were formed, the team bought used jerseys from the University of Chicago and team founder Chris O’Brien called the faded color “Cardinal red.” Ironically, the second oldest team is the Chicago Bears (initially the Decatur Staleys).
Today, the NFL has 32 teams, and the season is 17 weeks long.
The 10 oldest teams in the NFL:
