Sweet Tomatoes storefront and sign on South Tamiami Trail in Fort Myers

Sweet Tomatoes in Fort Myers (14080 S. Tamiami Trail) reopened in June under new ownership. The former owners went bankrupt in 2020 due to Covid, and recently a new owner has begun to revitalize the chain. The first restaurant to reopen was in Tucson in 2024, and Fort Myers is the second. The day I visited last month the parking lot was packed as far as the eye could see, with dozens of people parking on the grass.

We thought it would be difficult to find a seat, but the restaurant is run so efficiently that there was no problem. Of course, after filling our plates with greens and toppings, we did have to stand in line for soup, pasta, and bread. However, the dessert and ice-cream station moved smoothly. There’s no way anyone could leave there without “filling up.” The staff is helpful, the seating is cleaned constantly, and the price is very reasonable. I hope you’ll take a drive down U.S. 41 past Daniels Parkway — watch for it on the right. It’s well worth the half-hour drive. One note: Sweet Tomatoes is a cashless restaurant.

Oasis Outdoors, a “re-opening” closer to home, is just 10 minutes down U.S. 41 on Hancock Bridge Parkway. Oasis Outdoors is a new type of restaurant — it also sells upscale outdoor furniture and offers an event space. They call their fare “chop it up sandwiches.” Sandwiches range from a Chicago Style Italian to the Crunchwich to Mama C’s Chicken Salad. The restaurant is located in the building that was previously the Sunflower Market. Open daily, except Sundays, from 10 am to 4 pm, there’s a casual “front porch” atmosphere, although some dining is available inside. The carry-out selection is excellent with speedy service. You can grab your lunch at the handy service window, have a leisurely meal on the wrap around porch or enjoy your repast in the welcoming air conditioning.
